Bio Plastics fascinate with innovative & future-oriented material surfaces

“Sustainability,” says textile designer Tanja Maria Nitsche “always has an implicitly conceptual dimension”. Under the heading ‘About Solving and Dissolving’ Bio Plastics she transposes this concept into materials and creates organic plastics with fascinatingly visual and tactile surfaces.

The project was embedded in a design programme that focuses on the environmental aspects and the vision of a sustainable future and asks how the wider public can be familiarised with this complex theme.

The material collection and a book written about the surface design possibilities of plantbased plastics explain how the material can be produced. Nitsche shows that shapes, laser cutting and the admixture of other ingredients such as recycled paper, fibres and mica influence the durability, flexibility, transparency and texture of the material, and the material colour can change over time and that its intensity and shades depend heavily on the given light source. Bio Plastics researches how these diverse factors interact and which technologies and tools are required to process this innovative/sustainable material.
