INSIDE LIBERTY LONDON WITH HANNAH KAY

With over 140 years of experience, Liberty dominates the fabrics market and knows a thing or two about quality, beauty and building a fashion empire. In an interview with Liberty Wholesale Project Manager, Hannah Kay, offers exclusive insights into their design and production processes as well as essential tips for mastering your next trade show visit!

As Wholesale Project Manager, Hannah is responsible for overseeing all marketing projects for new season collections; from organising trade shows to launch events as well as any selling tools required to bring the fabrics to market. Bringing a lot of fun and energy to her role, the most exciting aspect of her role is seeing each new collection coming to life and discovering all the stories behind each design – especially understanding how this relates to the initial design brief that was set by the Head of Design.

At Liberty, the design process starts of 18-24 months in advance of the season with their in house design team being briefed on an idea from our Head of Design. The team of 11 designers will set about painting and drawing, these prints will then be scanned into the computer for refining and colour editing. Their Head of Design is always conducting research on trends, however as Liberty is such an influential company in the fabrics market and as a result of working so far in advance they actually set a lot of the trends themselves. The final part of the process is sending these designs to their private printer in Olonia, Italy, once these designs have been tested and approved they set about making bulk production.

“As we have been doing this for so long that our passion shows in how a new collection comes together time and time again and just as amazing as the last.”

With a new collection designed every season, Liberty prints their own lustrous fabrics including Cotton, Silks, Viscose, Velvet and much more, including sustainable products. The key values of the brand is their unique heritage, colour and quality. Since they started making fabrics in 1875, their prints are uniquely colourful, bright and always made to a very high standard. Wondering how the brand sustains their success and creative edge, Hannah attests their passion comes from their collections, with each new season launching 40 new designs, some of which have been re-worked from their archive of over 43,000 designs.
